Cardiac Surgery

In the vast majority of economically developed countries with advanced medicine, cardiovascular diseases rank first in the list of reasons for population’s premature death and disability.

According to the statistics of World Health Organization, 50-60% of deaths in the age above 40 occur due to cardiovascular diseases.

The undeniable achievements of Israeli cardiology and cardiac surgery:

In Israel cardiovascular diseases DO NOT present the major cause for premature mortality of Israeli citizens

There is no age restriction in Israel for getting heart surgery for various heart diseases

According to the official data of the Israeli Cardiac Surgery Association, over 15% of heart surgeries in Israel are conducted on patients older than age of 80.

Israeli Heart centers successfully diagnose and treat a complete spectrum of cardiovascular diseases. Due to technological breakthrough and huge experience of Israeli specialists, complicated open-heart surgeries as well as the latest minimally invasive treatment of heart diseases have become the standard treatments in Israel. Comprehensive diagnostic process of heart diseases is represented by a wide range of advanced minimally invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures.

Diagnostic methods for heart diseases commonly used in Israel:

Echocardiography - ultrasound (US) for the research of the structure and condition of the valves and heart chambers. This research is aimed at morphological and functional changes of the heart chambers and heart valves. This method is based on capturing reflected from the heart structures ultrasonic signals. Echocardiography is used to define the heart structures and surrounding tissues, detecting of thrombus and pericardial fluid and as a survey of contractility ventricles of the heart. Echocardiography reveals congenital and acquired defects, hypertrophy of cameras, tumors, lesions infarction, pericarditis and other pathology.

Three-dimensional echocardiography is a diagnostic method that allows detecting and correctly estimating extent certain cardiac pathologies. One of purposes in this method is to detect violation of synchrony contraction of the heart chambers. Besides this method allows locating and prevalence of scarring zones, ischemia and identify connection of these zones with certain defeat of coronary arteries as well.

Stress echocardiography with dobutamine is a non-invasive method used to identify the extent of coronary lesions and to evaluate the severity of coronary artery disease. For this research can be used veloergometry or treadmill test using a special running track. Dobutamine increases the power and frequency of heart rate also increasing the heart’s requirement of oxygen. Thereby dobutamine injection makes heart react as for perform physical work. The load increases heart rate causing increased consumption of oxygen. If ischemic heart disease has a place, coronary artery may not provide enough required flow rate that affects well-being of the patient and displayed on objective indicators captured by devices.

Cardiac Computer Tomography, including a virtual method coronary angiography - a survey that allows evaluating the structure of coronary vessels, the presence and degree of stenosis / occlusion of coronary vessels.

Halter survey is diagnostic method when it carried out daily monitoring of heart activity. For this research is used portable recorder that provides around the clock recording and transmission of electrocardiogram information about daily heart activity directly to the computer. This sort of monitoring allows identification of violations that are imperceptible to the dormant and appear only at the time of stress situations, physical exercise, eating and sleeping. The full Halter monitoring is conducted for 24-72 hours whereas normal electrocardiogram retains only about 40-50 heartbeats. This method let us to recognize and correctly diagnose certain heart conditions

Radionuclide Diagnostics - a set of methods used for detection of myocardium defects or functional ventricular disabilities.

Chest X-ray - a method for determining shape and size of the chest and the state of pulmonary vessels.

Magnetic resonance angiography - safe, out of ionizing radiation, method of radiant diagnostics, with three-dimensional image of the vessels.

MRI- a survey that gives an of the extent damage of the heart muscle, heart vessels and allows yo✓to explore the bloodstream.

Common cardiovascular diseases treated in Israeli heart centers:

Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease that affects the arteries. The disease is caused by deposits lipoproteins.

Hypertensive heart disease manifests itself in the form of increased blood pressure. Signs of hypertension It is ringing in the ears, headache. Without proper treatment this kind of disease is quite dangerous, because it might leads to the defeat of most vital organs.

Myocardial infarction is a heart muscle damage that occurs due to occlusion of one or more coronary arteries. Major risk factors include atherosclerosis heredity, overweight, smoking, unbalanced diabetes.

Ischemic heart disease is a pathological condition, characterized by the disturbance of blood supply to the myocardium due to stenosis or occlusion of the coronary arteries. This disease is often associated with other cardiovascular diseases, for instance, Angina pectoris.

Heart valve/s diseases- pathological conditions of heart valve or its walls defects gradually leading to a heart failure. Heart valve diseases are chronic and slowly progressive. Full recovery of the patient is usually possible only with surgical intervention. In case of successful and timely treatment, the patient’s life expectancy should be similar to that of a person without heart valve disease.  There are two large groups of heart valves defects: congenital (presented at birth) and acquired.

There are several different heart valve pathologies: stenosis, regurgitation (insufficiency), atresia and combination of the previous pathologies.

Stenosis of the heart valve happens when the flaps of valve thicken or fuse together. The damaged heart valve can’t open fully. This condition results in decreased blood flow through the valve.

Regurgitation or Insufficiency of heart valve occurs when the valve doesn't close tightly and there is a pathological backflow of the blood into the heart chambers.

Atresia of heart valve happens when the valve doesn’t develop normally during pregnancy, preventing the valve leaflets from opening. As the result, the blood cannot flow in a normal way.

Heart failure is a pathological condition, characterized by the violation of the contractile function of the heart muscles, and thus a violation of blood circulation. Heart failure can be a result of coronary heart disease, hypertension, stenosis and valvular insufficiency.

Angina pectoris is a form of coronary heart disease. The immediate reason of it is atherosclerosis of the heart arteries, in which the lumen of heart vessels is narrowed by atherosclerotic plaque (deposits of cholesterol on the arteries walls) resulting heart doesn’t get enough of oxygen enriched blood. It is manifested like sharp pain in the left chest.

Thromboembolism is an acute occlusion (embolism) of a blood vessel by thrombus that broke away from the place it was formed (on the heart wall, blood vessels) and got into the circulating blood.

Common cardiac procedures:

Balloon angioplasty and stenting- minimally invasive method of treatment of coronary artery disease by widening the narrowed or occluded coronary artery with balloon catheter and inserting the stent, which restores the normal blood flow and prevents the artery from the re-narrowing (restenosis).

Aorta-coronary bypass surgery is an operation for restoring a blood flow by creating pathways to circumvent the coronary artery, affected by atherosclerosis.
